Palos Verdes/SouthBay Audubon promotes green birding

Green Birding

While birding is a fantastic way to experience nature firsthand, but increasingly bird enthusiasts have found themselves questioning whether driving from vantage point to vantage point is actually counterproductive for the natural resources we hold in such high esteem. In other words, if you’re burning gas to watch birds, aren’t you just contributing to the forces of climate change that puts those same birds at risk? Well, the good folks at the Palos Verdes/South Bay Audubon Society this weekend are seeking to change all that with their Third Annual Green, Carbon Neutral Birdathon. A small group of chapter members will bird the area on bicycles to raise money for conservation projects. In the process they are hoping to spread the word about the growing green birding movement.

The group from Palos Verdes/South Bay Audubon – which calls themselves the Bushwackers – includes Martin Byhower, Dan Lee, Lauren Stoneburner and Lillian Babcock (assisted by Chris Boyd, Nancy Feagans and Eileen Byhower on foot)

Last year, the Bushwackers logged more than 110 species, and they’re looking to beat that total this year. They’re collecting contributions for each species counted over their 14-hour expedition.
